Program Overview: BSc Nursing Studies (Learning Disabilities)
The BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Learning Disabilities) at Teesside University prepares you for a rewarding career as a registered learning disabilities nurse. You play a central role in understanding the health needs of people with learning disabilities, supporting them in issues which affect their lives, their individual needs, rights and opportunities in society.
The program is designed to develop confident, articulate and aspiring graduate nurses who are future-ready, socially and ethically engaged, research-active, and digitally empowered. You gain specialist knowledge and skills in autism, effective communication, and creative, solution-focused problem-solving, while working alongside multi-disciplinary teams including psychiatrists, physiotherapists, psychologists and occupational therapists.
With 50% of learning time dedicated to theory and 50% to clinical practice placements, you benefit from hands-on experience in both community and hospital settings. On successful completion, you will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) on the nurses' part of the Professional Register for Learning Disabilities Nursing.

Nursing Decision-making and Evidence-based Practice
40 creditsBuild your knowledge and skills in the role, nature and use of evidence to support decision-making, health and social care practice and service improvement. Decision-making theory is explored and applied to contemporary nursing practice.
Professionalism, Communication and Leadership
20 creditsWith content linked to the NMC Code, you develop professionalism, relationship building and communication skills. You reflect on emotional intelligence, resilience and fundamental leadership skills.
Health and Illness Across the Lifespan

Promoting Health and Wellbeing in Learning Disability Services

Leading and Managing Complex Care in Learning Disabilities
