Program Overview: M.A. Responsibility in Science, Engineering and Technology (RESET)
The RESET Master's program at TUM is an Elite Graduate Program affiliated with the Elite Network of Bavaria that offers a practice-oriented graduate education for students interested in both the technical and social aspects of responsibility in today's highly technologized societies. With its distinctive focus on issues of responsibility and responsiveness, the program combines rigorous training in Science and Technology Studies (STS) with project-based immersion in engineering, science, citizen engagement, and policy-making.
Students acquire broad and in-depth knowledge of theories, methods, and techniques from various disciplines including STS, public policy, innovation studies, economics, law, media studies, and ethics. The program draws its interdisciplinary strength from a diverse student body with backgrounds in STEM, social sciences, humanities, economics, law, and life sciences, and specifically targets students with previous work or research experience.
Graduates are able to identify, analyze, and critically discuss social, economic, political, cultural, and legal aspects of science and technology. The program prepares you for public and private sector careers that integrate governance, responsibility, responsiveness, precaution, and care into science and technology innovation processes.

Curriculum and Modules
The RESET curriculum is structured across four semesters, combining mandatory and elective modules worth 90 credits with a 30-credit Master's thesis. The program follows an innovative term structure that blends theory-driven STS foundations with applied, immersive learning experiences including case studies, projects, and an internship.
Technology and Society
Semester 1A multidisciplinary introduction to the concepts and practices of responsible innovation, examining interactions between science, technology, and society across five blocks: politics, economics, law, ethics, and media. Cases draw on topics such as GMOs, climate change, geoengineering, nuclear power, and nanotechnology.
Immersion Project
Semester 1A semester-long project in which students learn to apply STS theories to a current controversial debate in small project groups. Students continually revise and refine their project as they gain theoretical knowledge, writing reflective essays on political, economic, ethical, media-related, and legal dimensions of responsibility.
Qualitative Research Methods
Semester 1Students learn the basics of qualitative social research, becoming familiarized with specific methods as well as their underlying philosophical assumptions. This foundational module equips students with the analytical tools necessary for conducting rigorous STS research.
STEM Immersion and STS Tutorials
Semester 2Students attend STEM courses and analyze the respective disciplinary knowledge cultures, focusing on issues of responsibility in each discipline. In STS tutorials, students reflect on STEM lectures in light of their STS knowledge and write analytical reports.
Internship and Science School
Semester 3Students apply their acquired knowledge in a mandatory internship, which can be completed in Germany or abroad. They then present and discuss their internship experiences and analyses in a self-organized mini symposium known as the Science School.
Master's Thesis
Semester 4 (30 ECTS)The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, through which students carry out research that is highly relevant to stakeholders in academia, industry, government, and NGOs. The thesis addresses responsibility in contemporary technoscience.
