Program Overview: Information Technologies for the Built Environment
The M.Sc. Information Technologies for the Built Environment (ITBE) at TUM is a unique interdisciplinary program that equips students with knowledge and competencies in information technologies spanning architecture, civil engineering, and geodesy. You will learn to capture, generate, interpret, utilize, and adapt digital data and information at the interface of different digital systems across the construction lifecycle.
Digital twins, smart cities, geoinformation systems (GIS), building information modeling (BIM), design automation, digital fabrication, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence are among the core technologies explored in this program. As digitalization transforms the building industry, specialists are needed to connect developments in information technologies across building disciplines and scales.
Upon completion, you will have a holistic, interdisciplinary understanding of information technologies and methods in the built environment. You will be able to consult on, develop, and manage information models and systems, combining existing technologies and creating innovative new approaches within the built environment.
Key Program Highlights
- Interdisciplinary curriculum bridging architecture, civil engineering, geodesy, and computer science
- Hands-on ITBE Fusion Lab project in the third semester solving real-world built environment challenges
- Taught primarily in English at one of Europe's top-ranked technical universities
- Access to dedicated BIM Lab with high-performance computing facilities and industry networking events
Curriculum & Modules
The ITBE program is structured across four semesters, with compulsory modules totaling 54 credit points in the first three semesters and a minimum of 36 credits from elective modules. The first semester builds foundational knowledge in information technologies across building domains, while the second and third semesters focus on integrated, cross-domain IT challenges. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis.
IT in Architecture
6 ECTSExplores information technology applications in architectural design, including computational design methods, digital fabrication workflows, and design automation tools used in modern architectural practice.
IT in Civil Engineering
6 ECTSCovers information technology methods applied to civil engineering, including structural data management, digital modeling of infrastructure, and IT-driven approaches to construction project planning.
IT in Geodesy and Geoinformation
6 ECTSFocuses on geoinformation systems (GIS), remote sensing technologies, spatial data acquisition, and geospatial information management for built environment applications at various scales.
BIM Fundamentals
6 ECTSIntroduces Building Information Modeling concepts, standards, and workflows, covering the creation, management, and utilization of digital building models throughout the construction lifecycle.
Cross-Domain Integration of IT in the Built Environment
6 ECTSExamines built environment information technology issues from multiple domain perspectives, developing a holistic and integrated understanding of how IT solutions connect architecture, civil engineering, and geodesy.
ITBE Fusion Lab
12 ECTSA practical, team-based project module where interdisciplinary student teams apply digital methods to develop solutions for real-world built environment information technology challenges.
