Latin BA
Southwestern University Campus, United States
The Bachelor of Arts in Latin at Southwestern University offers students a comprehensive exploration of the Latin language and the vast cultural legacy of ancient Rome. The program begins with intensive language instruction, building proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, before advancing to the careful reading and interpretation of original Latin texts. Students engage directly with works by authors such as Cicero, Vergil, Ovid, Horace, Livy, and Tacitus, gaining insight into Roman literature, history, philosophy, and law.
The program is deeply interdisciplinary, encouraging students to connect Latin studies with broader fields such as classical civilization, philosophy, mythology, art, and archaeology. Many students also participate in Sunoikisis, a national collaborative initiative with Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies, which allows them to take part in shared courses, seminars, and research projects with peers and faculty across the country.
A key component of the Latin major is the capstone experience, which involves a semester-long research project. Under close faculty mentorship, students develop a formal paper and present their findings in an oral defense before a committee. This process sharpens critical thinking, strengthens writing and communication skills, and provides valuable preparation for graduate study or professional careers.
Southwestern’s Latin program also recognizes prior achievement: students may earn credit through placement exams, with the possibility of fulfilling up to six hours of language equivalency. Outside the classroom, traditions such as Exelauno Day celebrate student learning through performances and cultural activities, adding a sense of community and fun to the academic rigor.
Graduates of the Latin B.A. program leave with strong skills in linguistic analysis, interpretation, research, and problem-solving, making them well-prepared for careers in education, law, publishing, ministry, museum work, archaeology, or academia. Others go on to graduate and professional schools, where their classical training provides a powerful foundation for advanced study.
By blending rigorous language training, interdisciplinary perspectives, and rich cultural traditions, Southwestern University’s Latin B.A. cultivates not only scholarly excellence but also an enduring appreciation for the intellectual heritage of the ancient world.
