Program Overview: Civil Engineering Technologies (Civil Construction Option)

The Civil Engineering Technologies (Civil Construction Option) Co-Op Diploma is a 27-month program offered full-time at Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Moose Jaw Campus. It includes five academic semesters and two consecutive four-month paid Co-operative Education work terms, giving you the opportunity to earn while you learn and gain invaluable industry experience.

The first two semesters are common to both the Construction and Water Resources options, building foundational skills in surveying, computer applications, materials analysis, hydraulics, and project management. After successfully completing the second semester, you will specialize in the Civil Construction option, developing knowledge in geotechnical engineering, pavement design, structures, and transportation.

This program is accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) at the Technologist level, placing graduates on an expedited path toward professional registration as a Professional Technologist (P.Tech.) or Certified Technician (C.Tech.) through Technology Professionals Saskatchewan. Graduates can also ladder into the Bachelor of Construction Management or Bachelor of Applied Management degree at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

Key Program Highlights

  • Two paid four-month Co-operative Education work terms integrated into the program for hands-on industry experience
  • Accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) at the Technologist level
  • Pathway to professional registration as P.Tech. or C.Tech. through Technology Professionals Saskatchewan
  • Direct laddering opportunity into the Bachelor of Construction Management or Bachelor of Applied Management degree

Curriculum and Modules

The curriculum combines foundational engineering technology courses in the first two semesters with specialized civil construction modules in semesters three through five. Students experience a blend of laboratory work, field assignments, project-based learning, lectures, and co-operative work terms to build practical, industry-ready skills.

Surveying and Geomatics

Develop skills in surveying techniques, measurement systems, and geomatics applications used in civil construction projects, including field data collection and analysis.

Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD)

Build fundamental CAD skills using industry-standard software, including two-dimensional geometric construction, dimensioning, and drawing output for engineering design.

Concrete and Materials Technology

Explore the practical and theoretical aspects of concrete technology, including sustainable concrete practices and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) test procedures on aggregates and concrete.

Geotechnical Engineering

Study soil investigations, earthworks projects, and geotechnical principles essential for civil construction, including site assessment and ground condition analysis.

Physical Geology

Study the origin, composition, and characteristics of major minerals and rock classifications, as well as geologic processes, landforms, and structures referencing Saskatchewan's glaciated terrain.

Hydraulics and Municipal Infrastructure

Learn hydraulic principles and their application to municipal infrastructure systems, including water supply, drainage, and stormwater management for civil construction projects.

Specialization and Elective Areas

Pavement Design and Transportation Engineering Structural Analysis and Design Construction Project Management and Estimating Laboratory Safety and Statistical Analysis
