Program Overview: Joint Master in Applied Geophysics

The Joint Master in Applied Geophysics is a prestigious two-year program offered collaboratively by three of Europe's leading technical universities: RWTH Aachen University (Germany), TU Delft (The Netherlands), and ETH Zurich (Switzerland). This unique IDEA League program brings together outstanding students with leading scientists in applied geophysics, equipping graduates with an exceptional foundation in mathematics, physics, and programming tailored to geophysical applications.

Students move together as a cohort between the three partner universities, spending one semester at each institution before completing a research thesis in the final semester. The first semester at TU Delft focuses on geophysical methods and data analysis theory, the second at ETH Zurich covers inverse theory, numerical modeling, and an extensive field course, and the third at RWTH Aachen offers flexible elective specializations including geothermal energy, numerical methods, hydrogeophysics, and machine learning.

This program is designed for students passionate about exploring the Earth's subsurface to address global sustainability challenges. The curriculum combines rigorous theoretical coursework with hands-on fieldwork and close collaboration with industry partners, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for the demands of the international job market in applied geophysics and related fields.

Key Program Highlights

  • Joint degree from three leading European technical universities: RWTH Aachen, TU Delft, and ETH Zurich
  • International cohort experience studying in three countries: Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland
  • Extensive hands-on fieldwork including a one-month geophysical field course at ETH Zurich
  • Close industry collaboration with energy, environmental, and engineering sector partners

Curriculum and Modules

The 120-ECTS curriculum is structured across four semesters at three partner universities. The first 18 months comprise coursework divided into three teaching periods in Delft, Zurich, and Aachen, while the final five months are devoted to a research thesis project at one of the three universities or in industry.

Geophysical Methods and Data Analysis

Semester 1 at TU Delft

Covers the fundamental theory of different geophysical methods including seismic, gravity, magnetic, and electromagnetic techniques, along with rigorous data analysis and signal processing foundations.

Inverse Theory and Numerical Modeling

Semester 2 at ETH Zurich

Focuses on inverse theory, numerical modeling approaches, and practical applications of geophysical methods to real-world subsurface exploration problems.

Seismic Data Processing

Semester 2 at ETH Zurich

Provides in-depth training in seismic data acquisition, processing workflows, and interpretation techniques used in both hydrocarbon exploration and environmental geophysics.

Geophysical Field Course

Semester 2 at ETH Zurich

An extensive one-month field course where students acquire, process, and interpret geophysical data in real field conditions, bridging theory with hands-on practice.

Numerical Methods and Machine Learning

Semester 3 at RWTH Aachen

Covers advanced numerical methods and scientific machine learning approaches applied to geophysical problems, reflecting RWTH Aachen's research strengths in computational geosciences.

Master's Thesis Research Project

Semester 4

A five-month independent research thesis project conducted at one of the three partner universities or within an industry setting, representing the capstone of the program.

Elective Specializations at RWTH Aachen

Hydrogeophysics Borehole Geophysics Geothermal Energy Exploration Computational Geology and Geophysics
