Program Overview: Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Diploma at Red Deer Polytechnic prepares you for a rewarding career using ultrasound technology to support accurate diagnosis and patient care. As a student, you will develop the technical expertise, critical thinking skills, and professional judgement required to create and interpret detailed diagnostic images of the human body.

This comprehensive diploma program combines classroom learning, simulated practice, and clinical experience to build a strong foundation in sonographic physics, ultrasound instrumentation, image acquisition, and image interpretation. You will also learn to provide compassionate, ethical, and patient-centred care while working with patients across a wide range of healthcare settings.

The DMS Diploma is a generalist program, and graduates are eligible to write the credentialing examinations through Sonography Canada to become Canadian Registered Generalist Sonographers. This is one of only three such programs offered at public post-secondary institutions in Alberta, addressing a critical shortage of sonography professionals across the province.

Key Program Highlights

  • One of only three Diagnostic Medical Sonography diploma programs offered at public post-secondary institutions in Alberta
  • 1,080 hours of hands-on clinical practicum across three clinical placement courses
  • State-of-the-art Sonography Lab with advanced ultrasound simulation equipment for patient simulations before clinical placements
  • Graduates are eligible to challenge the Sonography Canada credentialing exam to become Canadian Registered Generalist Sonographers
