MA Linguistics
Mile End Campus (Main), United Kingdom
The Linguistics MA is a one‑year full‑time programme that blends advanced coursework with a supervised 10,000‑word dissertation and offers four specialist pathways—Conversion, General, Formal Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. Core modules cover research design, sociolinguistic theory, formal semantics and phonetics, while optional electives include discourse analysis, language documentation and quantitative methods. The dissertation requires an original study and a research practicum may involve placement with a faculty project, potentially incurring travel costs. Teaching takes place in seminars, workshops and one‑on‑one supervision, and students gain access to dedicated labs, the Graduate Centre and extensive library resources in the East End of London. Assessment combines essays, oral presentations and the dissertation, preparing graduates for academic research, policy work or careers in communication and technology sectors.
