MSc Dental Materials
Mile End Campus (Main), United Kingdom
The MSc Dental Materials programme, delivered by the Institute of Dentistry in collaboration with the School of Engineering and Materials Science, provides a comprehensive education in the principles governing dental biomaterials. Students acquire deep understanding of the composition, mechanical performance, surface characteristics and biocompatibility of polymers, metals, ceramics and composites used in restorative and preventive dentistry. Core modules cover properties of dental materials, processing techniques, research methodology, oral pathology and the oral microbiome, as well as biomineralisation and minimally invasive treatment strategies. The programme emphasizes both clinical and non‑clinical applications, preparing graduates for careers in product development, research and academia. A substantial research project enables original investigation into areas such as novel remineralising composites, nano‑apatite ceramics or drug‑delivery systems, culminating in a dissertation that demonstrates independent scientific inquiry. Upon completion, graduates possess the expertise to evaluate and design dental materials, contribute to evidence‑based practice and pursue advanced roles within the healthcare sector.
