Program Overview: MA in Teaching Mindfulness-Based Courses
The MA in Teaching Mindfulness-Based Courses at Bangor University provides comprehensive training to become a qualified mindfulness teacher. Upon completion, you earn both a Masters-level qualification and the Certificate of Competence in Mindfulness teacher training, which represents the highest level of mindfulness teacher training available in the UK.
This program is delivered by the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (CMRP) at Bangor, which is the largest and oldest mindfulness teacher training organisation in the UK with over 15 years of experience. Bangor was the first university in the world to offer a Masters in mindfulness-based approaches, and the program is taught by staff who are active researchers in the field of mindfulness.
The course takes between four to five years to complete on a part-time basis, allowing you to progress at your own pace alongside professional commitments. Students consistently praise the supportive and experiential learning environment, and develop a close community of learning as they advance through the program.
Key Program Highlights

Curriculum and Modules
The program consists of four compulsory modules and one optional module, structured across four to five years. Each module builds progressively on the previous one, combining experiential learning with theoretical foundations to develop your competence as a mindfulness teacher.
This foundational module focuses on exploring your own mindfulness practice. The experiential component is delivered alongside teachings about the theory and rationale underlying mindfulness-based approaches, establishing a strong personal and academic grounding.
This module focuses on training you to teach the core meditation practices and to develop the enquiry skills used in MBSR and MBCT courses. You will begin building the practical teaching competencies essential for delivering mindfulness-based programmes.
Building on the skills learned during Teaching 1, this module further explores the explicit, taught elements of MBCT and MBSR programmes. You will deepen your understanding of curriculum delivery and refine your facilitation techniques.
This is the culmination of your mindfulness teacher training. Your teaching is assessed in-depth by an experienced mindfulness teacher using the MBI:TAC competence tool, which was developed at Bangor and is recognised globally as the premier mindfulness teaching assessment instrument.
You will select one optional module to complement your compulsory studies. This allows you to tailor part of your learning to your specific interests or professional context within the broader field of mindfulness-based approaches.
