Program Overview: MA in Mindfulness-Based Approaches
The MA in Mindfulness-Based Approaches at Bangor University enables you to study mindfulness-based approaches in depth without the requirement to train as a mindfulness teacher. Delivered by the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (CMRP), which is the largest and oldest mindfulness teacher training organisation in the UK, this program draws on decades of pioneering research and practice in the field.
This flexible, part-time program takes between three and five years to complete, allowing you to progress at your own pace alongside professional and personal commitments. The program comprises three compulsory modules — Foundation, Research, and Thesis — plus two elective modules of your choice, giving you the ability to tailor your studies to your interests and career goals.
Bangor University was the first institution in the world to offer a Masters in mindfulness-based approaches, and the CMRP staff are active researchers whose work has shaped the global understanding of mindfulness-based interventions. Graduates leave with a solid understanding of the theoretical underpinnings, research evidence, and practical applications of mindfulness in diverse professional contexts including healthcare, education, and social care.

- Taught by active researchers who have published seminal work in the mindfulness field
Curriculum and Modules
The program is structured around three compulsory modules and two elective modules, allowing you to build a strong foundation in mindfulness research and practice while exploring areas of personal and professional interest. You may take up to two modules per year, with the final year typically dedicated to the thesis.
This compulsory first-year module focuses on exploring your own mindfulness practice. The experiential aspect is delivered alongside teachings about the theory and rationale underlying mindfulness-based approaches, providing a solid grounding for subsequent study.
This compulsory module can be taken at any point between Year 1 and Year 4 and must be completed before the thesis. It equips you with the research skills and methodological knowledge needed to critically evaluate mindfulness research and design your own study.
Taken in the final year of study, the thesis module is the culmination of your MA. You will undertake an independent research project on a mindfulness-related topic, demonstrating your ability to contribute original knowledge to the field.
This elective explores the principles, evidence base, and practical delivery of MBSR, one of the foundational mindfulness-based programs with the most developed research evidence base.
This elective examines the integration of cognitive therapy with mindfulness practices, focusing on the theoretical framework, clinical evidence, and applications of MBCT in healthcare and wellbeing settings.
