Program Overview: BA English Language and English Literature
This BA (Hons) in English Language and English Literature at Bangor University gives you the opportunity to study two important aspects of the English language, examining how it works, why and how it is used, and where it has come from. The English Language component covers grammatical structure, discourse analysis, sound formation, and how language use varies across speakers and changes over time.
The English Literature component enables you to read and critically analyse a wide range of literature in different genres and forms, spanning from Anglo-Saxon times to the contemporary era. You will study texts and authors from English, British, and American literature, exploring works through social, political, linguistic, and stylistic approaches.

You will choose 120 credits of modules each year, split equally between English Language and English Literature (60 credits in each field). Introduction to English Literature
20 creditsProvides a grounding in major literary works and popular genres, developing key skills in critical analysis and close reading from the medieval period through to contemporary writing.
English Grammar and Sentence Structure
20 creditsExplores the grammatical structure of English, examining how words and sentences are formed, and how meaning is made, interpreted, and extended across whole discourses.
History of the English Language
20 creditsTraces the development and emergence of English dialects and World Englishes, examining the role of English in society, in education, and as a global lingua franca.
Literary Periods and Critical Theory
20 creditsDevelops critical techniques and skills in reading literature, studying texts from across the span of English literary history and applying social, political, and stylistic analytical approaches.
Dissertation
