Program Overview: ICT Engineering for Smart Societies
ICT Engineering for Smart Societies (ICTE4SS) is an interdisciplinary Master of Science degree at Politecnico di Torino designed to train engineers who will lead the smart revolution and shape the societies of the future. After learning core ICT topics such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, smart networks, and the Internet of Things, you will focus on key ICT applications for smart societies including energy, transport, building optimisation, smart health, and environment.
The program features an innovative teaching approach where an ICT expert and an application domain expert jointly serve as course instructors, ensuring you learn both domain-specific knowledge and related ICT tools. ICTE4SS employs a learning-by-doing approach in which you work on several projects developing problem definition and problem-solving skills throughout the curriculum.
Starting from the 2025/26 academic year, the program added Engineering to its title and updated most of its courses to reflect recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence. All courses are taught in English, creating an international environment that promotes cultural exchange and cooperation among students from diverse technical backgrounds.
Key Program Highlights
- Interdisciplinary curriculum combining core ICT methodologies with real-world applications in health, energy, transport, smart buildings, and environment
- Co-taught courses by paired ICT experts and application domain specialists ensuring both technical depth and practical relevance
- Over 300 hours of hands-on lab activities covering machine learning, deep neural networks, smart networks, IoT programming, and sensor networks
- Project-based learning approach with a dedicated 10 ECTS Interdisciplinary Projects course tackling real-world smart society challenges
Curriculum and Modules
The ICTE4SS curriculum is structured across two years with a multidisciplinary approach. In the first year, you learn the main ICT tools and methodologies, while the second year focuses on advanced applications, elective specialisations, interdisciplinary projects, and your master thesis or company internship.
Machine Learning and Neural Networks
10 ECTSCovers the fundamentals of machine learning including classification and regression methods, and the basics of deep learning. Applications span user localisation, document classification, hyperspectral imaging, object tracking, and character recognition.
Machine Learning for Health
10 ECTSApplies machine learning techniques to medical and diagnostic problems through image processing and data analysis. Topics include remote medical analysis using personal devices such as smartphones and ethical-scientific issues in patient care.
Advanced Machine Learning for Imaging and Vision
6 ECTSIntroduces advanced techniques in imaging and computer vision, including transformers and diffusion models. This newly introduced course reflects the latest developments in generative AI and deep learning for visual applications.
Smart Networks and Internet of Things
10 ECTSExplores mobile and sensor networks, data transmission systems, and IoT architectures that underpin smart society applications. Includes hands-on lab work in programming for IoT and mobile sensor networks.
Smart Mobility and Energy Systems
10 ECTSCovers how to extract useful information from raw mobility data, optimise mobility in smart cities, and use ICT for smart energy generation, transport, and distribution. Addresses reducing traffic congestion, pollution, and carbon emissions.
Interdisciplinary Projects
10 ECTSA key project-based learning course where students work in teams to solve real-world problems across ICTE4SS application domains. Develops communication, leadership, creativity, and interpersonal skills alongside technical competencies.
