Petroleum Engineering Technology Diploma at NAIT — Program Overview
The Petroleum Engineering Technology diploma at NAIT is a two-year program that prepares you for employment in the upstream (drilling and production) and midstream (pipeline) energy sectors. You will gain a deep understanding of the latest technologies and techniques used in the exploration, extraction, and production of oil and gas, with a strong emphasis on hands-on, practical learning.
Western Canada has an abundance of conventional and unconventional energy reserves that provide rewarding careers for petroleum engineering technologists. Industry demand continues to grow for professionals with strong theoretical and practical skills — the kind of skills developed through NAIT's applied approach to education.
Throughout the program, you will gain hands-on experience through lab-based projects using award-winning drilling simulators and expert industry training. You will also learn about sustainability and the role of petroleum engineers in ensuring the responsible and efficient use of natural resources.
Key Program Highlights
- Award-winning drilling simulators and custom-made laboratory equipment for realistic, hands-on training in rig operations and well completion processes
- Field placement between first and second year at industry sites including drilling operations, production facilities, pipeline operations, and government agencies
- Comprehensive curriculum covering petroleum geology, well drilling techniques, reservoir engineering, production optimization, and environmental protection
- Located in Edmonton, Alberta — the heart of Canada's energy sector — providing direct access to leading oil and gas employers and career opportunities
Curriculum and Modules — Petroleum Engineering Technology
The Petroleum Engineering Technology diploma delivers up-to-date knowledge across all core areas of the upstream petroleum industry. The curriculum blends classroom theory with extensive laboratory and simulator-based learning, preparing you with both the technical knowledge and practical skills demanded by employers in the energy sector.
An introductory reservoir-to-refinery overview of the oil and gas industry in Alberta, covering reservoir fluid behavior, land tenure, the Dominion survey system, drilling and completions, oil and gas production operations, refining, and heavy oil.
Explores the geological formations that contain petroleum reserves and the engineering principles behind reservoir characterization, fluid behavior, and resource estimation used in exploration and extraction planning.
Covers drilling methods, well design, and completion processes using NAIT's custom-made, award-winning drilling simulators. Students learn rig operations and the safety and science of drilling through virtual reality and hands-on lab exercises.
Focuses on the techniques and technologies used to maximize the efficient extraction of oil and gas from reservoirs, including artificial lift methods, well stimulation, and production monitoring systems.
Examines the environmental regulations, safety protocols, and sustainability practices essential to responsible petroleum operations, including spill prevention, emissions management, and site reclamation.
A mandatory industry placement occurring in the summer between first and second year. Placements may include drilling operations, well stimulation and testing, oil and gas production operations, pipeline operations, government agencies, or engineering departments with oil and gas producing companies.
