The Urban Planning MSc at Newcastle University provides a core introduction to urban planning issues, professional and theoretical debates, and their application to live cases and places. Curriculum and Modules

The majority of the course consists of compulsory modules that introduce you to the core values and principles of urban planning. The main focus is the UK planning system, complemented by international examples. You also have a choice of optional modules that help you develop a specialisation in planning practice informed by the latest research.

Spatial Strategy Project

Provides ideas and skills for thinking about planning interventions, introducing socio-spatial and process ideas on how and why to develop spatial strategies. You will work in groups on an intensive project to develop a spatial strategy for a given area of Newcastle or Gateshead.

Research Methods in Planning

Prepares students to undertake research for their final dissertation and for planning policy development and practice. Explores a range of approaches to methodologically robust research and helps students identify and refine their dissertation topic.

Planning Law and Environmental Management

Introduces students to the law of town and country planning and its use as a tool of environmental management. Covers mechanisms used in planning law to structure development, including planning conditions, agreements and planning gain.

Economics of the Development Process

Develops a detailed theoretical and practical understanding of the economics of the development process. No previous knowledge of economics is required, as core principles are covered in the early sessions.

Planning Theory and Practice

Explores the theoretical foundations of urban planning and how they apply to professional practice. Covers key debates in planning theory and their relevance to contemporary planning challenges in the UK and internationally.

Dissertation

Enables students to undertake an in-depth study of a topic within urban planning, providing the opportunity to engage in a major research exercise. A member of planning staff will mentor you through your individual dissertation research.
