The Spatial Planning PGDip at Newcastle University provides you with the academic and professional core knowledge, understanding and skills to practise professionally as an urban planner. This is a conversion degree, meaning you do not need to have studied planning before, making it ideal for graduates from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds.
Delivered within the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, the programme focuses on understanding places and placemaking to achieve optimal social, economic and environmental outcomes. You will study compulsory modules covering the core values and principles of urban planning, complemented by optional modules that allow you to develop a specialisation informed by the latest research.
The programme can be studied full-time over 9 months or part-time over 21 months, with approximately 12 hours of taught time and 28 hours of independent study per week for full-time students. Teaching is delivered on the Newcastle campus through lectures, seminars, workshops and studio-based activities, supported by the Canvas virtual learning environment.

The Spatial Planning PGDip curriculum is built around a series of compulsory modules that introduce you to the core values and principles of urban planning, with the main focus on the UK system complemented by international examples.
