English Literature MPhil

The English Literature MPhil at Newcastle University is a research-focused postgraduate degree designed for students who wish to undertake advanced independent study in a specialised area of literature. The programme is delivered within a dynamic and well-resourced research environment, supported by expert academic supervision throughout the duration of the degree. It is structured primarily around independent research, allowing students to develop and pursue a focused research project in consultation with their supervisor. The programme covers a wide chronological and thematic range of literary studies, including medieval and early modern literature, eighteenth-century and Romantic literature, Victorian literature, modernism, postcolonial and Black Atlantic literature, American literature, children’s literature, medical humanities, poetry criticism, scholarly editing, and theatre and performance studies. Students are encouraged to engage critically with literary texts, theoretical frameworks, and historical contexts while developing advanced research methodologies and analytical skills. The MPhil provides an opportunity to contribute original academic work within a supportive scholarly community.
