Program Overview: Law and Social Sciences MPhil at Middlesex University

The School of Law and Social Sciences at Middlesex University offers a vibrant and diverse MPhil research programme, with approximately 40 students engaged in research spanning law, politics, international relations, criminology, and sociology. Students are based either at the London campus or overseas, including at campuses in Mauritius and Dubai, providing a truly global research community.

Within the School, you will benefit from supervision by leading academics and a multidisciplinary research environment that brings together doctoral students, researchers, practitioners, and professionals from within and outside the academy. Middlesex is home to outstanding research centres including the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre, the Prisons Research Group, the Centre for Social and Criminological Research, and the Centre for Abuse, Trauma and Suicide Studies.

All doctoral students initially enrol on the MPhil programme, with the option to transfer to a PhD once sufficient research progress has been made, typically after 18 to 24 months. The MPhil degree focuses on contributing new understanding of existing knowledge through critical review or evaluation, equipping you with advanced research, analytical, and writing skills.

Research Structure and Training

The MPhil programme is a research-based degree that follows a structured three-stage process. You will undertake independent research under expert supervision while participating in the University Researcher Development Programme, which consists of weekly sessions designed to build your skills as a researcher.

Registration and Research Proposal Development

Stage 1 (0-6 months)

During the first stage, you formalise your research proposal, define objectives, and establish your methodology. Registration typically takes place within six months of enrolment for full-time students.

University Researcher Development Programme

Ongoing

Weekly sessions that build essential research skills, covering areas such as research methodology, academic writing, data analysis, and presentation techniques for both your current project and future career.

Doctoral Institute Seminars

Biannual

Twice a year, students and colleagues in the Doctoral Institute spend two intensive days together, featuring sessions led by senior scholars, student presentations, and workshops on matters of practical importance.

Independent Research and Thesis Writing

Core

You conduct original research under the guidance of a Director of Studies and at least one additional supervisor. The MPhil thesis is up to 40,000 words for text-only submissions or 20,000 words with an accompanying artefact.

MPhil to PhD Transfer Assessment

Stage 2 (18-24 months)

A transfer panel assesses whether sufficient progress has been made to progress from MPhil to PhD registration. This milestone typically occurs within 18 to 24 months for full-time students.

Thesis Submission and Viva Examination

Final Stage

The final stage involves producing a complete draft of your thesis and submitting it for examination through an oral defence (viva voce), demonstrating critical analysis and original thought.
