Translational Research in Surgery, Perioperative and Critical Care MRes
Imperial College London, Hammersmith Campus, United Kingdom
Translational Research in Surgery, Perioperative and Critical Care MRes is a research‑led programme designed to address the complexity of modern surgical practice and its close integration with perioperative and critical care. The course adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, recognising that effective innovation in this field requires collaboration across clinical, scientific, and engineering disciplines. Teaching explores how translational research approaches are used to identify unmet needs, analyse clinical challenges, and develop solutions that can move from experimental studies into real healthcare practice. Core content focuses on current issues within surgery, perioperative management, and critical care, while highlighting methodologies that support safe and effective translation of research into patient‑centred outcomes. The programme includes opportunities for clinical observerships, allowing direct exposure to surgical and critical care environments and supporting understanding of how research concepts are applied in practice. This experience strengthens the ability to contextualise research questions within real clinical workflows. A major element of the course is an extended research project, during which participants become embedded within an active research team working on a current challenge in surgery, perioperative, or critical care medicine. This project supports the development of independent research capability, critical analysis, and professional communication skills. Through its combination of interdisciplinary teaching, practical exposure, and extended research, the programme prepares graduates for advanced clinical academic pathways, healthcare research roles, or continued doctoral‑level study in translational and applied medical science.
