Medicine at Queen's University Belfast — Program Overview

The Medicine program at Queen's University Belfast is a five-year integrated undergraduate degree leading to the award of MB BCh BAO (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor in the Art of Obstetrics). As the only medical school in Northern Ireland and a member of the prestigious Russell Group, Queen's offers students clinical placements across all regional hospitals and over 150 general practices from first year onwards.

The curriculum is built around four 'Double-Helical Themes' that run through every module and year: Global and Population Health, Clinical Science and Practice, Achieving Good Medical Practice, and Teamwork for Safe Care. Students benefit from early clinical contact, cadaveric dissection in state-of-the-art facilities, and case-based learning that integrates clinical, biomedical, and behavioural sciences.

Queen's Medicine graduates are well prepared for the Foundation Programme and beyond, with an Assistantship module in the final year ensuring a smooth transition into professional practice. The program also offers intercalated degree options at Bachelor's and Master's level, as well as an international clinical elective in the final year.

Key Program Highlights

  • Early clinical contact with patients beginning in first year, with 25% of clinical placements in primary care settings
  • Cadaveric dissection taught in a state-of-the-art Dissection Suite — one of the few UK medical schools offering this experience
  • Integrated case-based learning across all years, combining clinical, biomedical, and behavioural science
  • Intercalated degree options and international clinical elective opportunities in the final year
