Curriculum and Modules

The Control and Optimisation MSc curriculum combines two core modules with a range of specialist electives and a substantial individual research project. Students carry out an individual research project spanning part-time study from January to March and full-time research from June to September.

Laboratory Project

Core Module

Understand best practice in experimental work through this laboratory-based module. You will develop practical skills in measurement, data acquisition, and the application of control theory to real systems.

Individual Research Project

Core Module

Carry out a piece of individual research with originality and scientific rigour, adopting analytical, computational, and experimental methods under expert supervision.

Nonlinear Systems and Control

Elective

Understand the concepts and theoretical techniques needed to study the stability and stabilisation of nonlinear control systems.

Optimisation

Elective

Become equipped with the tools required to formulate and solve applied optimisation problems and build on existing knowledge of descent methods and constrained optimisation.

System Identification

Elective

Analyse different methods for constructing stochastic models of dynamic systems from measurements of input and output signals.

Discrete Event Systems

Elective

Discover the basic techniques involved in the modelling, analysis, and control of discrete event systems and recognise systems suitable for modelling in a discrete-event setup.

Additional Elective Modules

Machine Learning and Distributed Algorithms Mechanics and Multibody Dynamics Robust Control Predictive Control
