Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure MSc
Imperial College London
Civil Engineering & Materials Science
Program Overview
The Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure MSc at Imperial College London trains future leaders in the role of materials in resilient and sustainable built infrastructure. Launched in 2019 to meet industry demand and address skills shortages, the programme provides engineers and scientists with a deep understanding of civil engineering materials, their behaviour, and their role in low-carbon design.
Delivered within Imperial's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, you will gain hands-on experience in the Advanced Infrastructure Materials Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility where researchers develop next-generation construction materials. The programme covers 12 assessed taught modules across two terms, followed by an independent summer research project that accounts for one-third of your degree.
This programme is ideal for innovative and motivated individuals who seek to solve real-world engineering challenges within economic, social, and environmental constraints. With the UK Government investing over GBP 60 billion per year in new infrastructure, there has never been a more relevant time to specialise in advanced materials for sustainable construction.
Key Program Highlights
- Access to the UKCRIC Advanced Infrastructure Materials Laboratory, a GBP 6.4 million research facility at Imperial
- Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, supporting your path toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration
- Industrial visits including concrete factories and field trips to assess real infrastructure such as bridges in Oxford
- Independent research project alongside leading academics, with opportunities for industrial placement partnerships
Curriculum & Modules
The MSc consists entirely of core material, with 12 assessed taught modules split evenly across the autumn and spring terms. In the summer term, you undertake an independent research project culminating in a written dissertation. The curriculum is designed to build from foundational concepts to advanced understanding, ensuring all students develop well-rounded expertise regardless of background.
Sustainable Engineering and Industrial Ecology
7.5 ECTSExplores sustainability principles, life cycle assessment (LCA), and material flow analysis (MFA) applied to the built environment, developing critical thinking using a systems perspective.
Geomaterials
7.5 ECTSCovers the formation, characterisation, and engineering properties of soils and rocks, including their extraction, processing, and applications in aggregates, concrete, bricks, and road construction.
Cementitious Materials
7.5 ECTSProvides advanced understanding of cement and binder chemistry, explaining why cementitious materials are used throughout the built environment and exploring their role in sustainable construction.
Mechanics of Materials
7.5 ECTSIntroduces the fundamental principles of the mechanics of materials and analyses the behaviour of structural components under load, building essential analytical skills.
Metals and Alloys in Civil Engineering
7.5 ECTSEnhances knowledge of the use of metals and alloys in civil engineering, with a focus on steel metallurgy, polymer composites, and their structural applications.
Durability and Condition Assessment of Concrete Structures
7.5 ECTSTeaches how to plan durability surveys, assess the condition of concrete structures, and understand different testing and monitoring techniques for infrastructure evaluation.
