Program Overview: Environmental Engineering at Manhattan University

Manhattan University offers both a Master of Science (M.S.) and a Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Environmental Engineering, preparing graduates to address critical challenges including drinking water treatment, air pollution, wastewater management, hazardous waste remediation, and climate change mitigation. Located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York, the program provides direct access to the environmental engineering industry across the New York metropolitan area. The M.E. track is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, underscoring the program's commitment to rigorous professional standards.

The program emphasizes current applications, innovative technologies, and the underlying theoretical basis for sound engineering practice in keeping with the societal need for maintaining and improving environmental quality and public health. Faculty in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department are active researchers who have partnered with students on projects funded by the Water Research Foundation, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

Students can pursue their degree in a fully online format (M.S.), a blended online and in-person format (M.E.), or entirely in-person, making the program accessible to working professionals and full-time students alike. A distinctive graduate internship program allows students to work at a local engineering firm three days a week while attending classes two days a week, with internships typically lasting 16 to 18 months.

Key Program Highlights

  • ABET-accredited M.E. degree track, one of the few accredited master's-level environmental engineering programs in the region
  • Paid graduate internship program with leading NYC-area engineering firms, including tuition scholarship or discount
  • Flexible delivery options: fully online (M.S.), blended online and in-person (M.E.), or entirely in-person
  • Small class sizes with fewer than 15 students, enabling close mentorship and collaboration with expert faculty

Curriculum & Modules

The Environmental Engineering master's program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate coursework. Students select from core required courses and specialized electives, with the option to complete a 3-credit independent study or a 6-credit thesis. Up to two courses outside the ENVG offerings may be taken with approval of the Program Director.

Surface Water Quality Modeling (ENVG 505)

3 Credits

Covers principles governing the transport and fate of contaminants in rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs. Includes water quality standards, transport processes, modeling for dissolved oxygen and nutrient enrichment, and computer-based solutions.

Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes (ENVG 506)

3 Credits

Examines the theory and design of physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes for water supply and wastewater systems. Emphasizes data analysis, material balances, and development of design criteria for various unit operations.

Environmental Chemistry (ENVG 508)

3 Credits

Applies principles of chemical equilibrium to quantitatively describe the chemical composition of natural waters and engineered aquatic systems. Students solve environmental engineering problems related to surface water, groundwater quality, and treatment systems.

Air Quality Analysis (ENVG 702)

3 Credits

Covers air pollution concepts, the Clean Air Act, basic meteorology, the Gaussian Plume Model, traffic impact analysis, environmental impact analysis, airshed and ozone models, and indoor air quality analysis.

Biological Treatment of Wastewaters (ENVG 718)

3 Credits

Focuses on biological processes used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Students study microbial kinetics, reactor design, and the application of biological systems to meet regulatory discharge standards.

Environmental Advanced Unit Operations (ENVG 736)

3 Credits

Advanced study of physical and chemical unit operations used in environmental engineering practice. Covers design and optimization of treatment processes for water, wastewater, and hazardous waste applications.

Elective Courses

Coastal Engineering (ENVG 546) Environmental Fate and Effects of Toxic Contaminants (ENVG 703) Water Chemistry (ENVG 706) Modeling of Civil and Environmental Engineering Problems (ENVG 500)
