The MA in Applied Psychology (Positive & Coaching Psychology) at University College Cork is an innovative programme that brings together the fields of positive psychology and coaching psychology. This NFQ Level 9 master's degree is designed for psychology graduates and professionals from diverse backgrounds, including HR, education, healthcare, and business, who wish to develop professional coaching skills grounded in psychological research. You will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in one-to-one and group coaching settings.
The programme is the first of its kind to be offered at MA level in the Republic of Ireland. It is taught by academics from UCC's School of Applied Psychology and supports pathways into coaching psychology, wellbeing consultancy, organisational development, performance enhancement, and further doctoral study.

Curriculum & Modules
The programme is structured in two parts. In Part I, you complete 60 credits consisting of 50 credits in core modules and 10 credits from elective modules. In Part II, you complete a 30-credit Research Dissertation, bringing the total to 90 ECTS. Work on the dissertation begins at the start of the programme under staff supervision.

Core ModuleProvides hands-on coaching practice integrating positive psychology frameworks, enabling you to coach clients for goal attainment and well-being in both individual and group settings.
Cognitive Enhancement and Motivational Interviewing
Core ModuleDeepens practical intervention techniques focusing on cognitive strategies and motivational approaches to support clients in achieving sustained behaviour change.
Qualitative Research Methods and Data Analysis
Core ModuleDevelops rigorous qualitative research design and analytical skills essential for evidence-based practice and for conducting your independent research dissertation.
Research Dissertation in Coaching Psychology
30 ECTS (Part II)A 15,000-word research report to professional standards, synthesising research, theory, and applied coaching psychology, accompanied by a 30-minute presentation to peers and experts.
