Curriculum & Modules — MA Screen Acting

The MA Screen Acting curriculum is structured across three trimesters, progressing from foundational screen acting craft through commercial and technology-enhanced performance to a culminating graduation project. Each trimester builds upon the previous one, combining practical skill development with theoretical understanding and industry preparation.

The Actor and the Empty Space

A deep investigation into the power of the actor in the Empty Space, as defined by Peter Brook. You will devise and perform a black-box performance piece stripped of screen apparatus, foregrounding the fundamental ways a performer connects to an audience through narrative.

Screen Acting Craft and Imagination

Engage with a range of practitioner-based techniques through a continuous cycle of performance and review. You will develop a detailed understanding of your relationship with the camera while working on dramaturgy, script analysis, and improvisation.

Professional Development and Elective Upskilling

Develop authentic career paperwork and supporting materials including a CV and personal profile. You will be offered elective upskilling sessions to develop screen industry skills outside your chosen discipline or as part of a multi-skilling profile.

Commercial Performance and Production

Explore the practice and techniques involved in commercial casting and performance, from conventional film and television scenarios through commercials, corporate video, and video games. You will also develop skills behind the camera as producers, directors, cinematographers, and editors.

Technology Enhanced Performance

Work on devising and performing sequences appropriate for technology-enhanced environments such as virtual production, green screen, and performance capture. You will develop physical language for a variety of performance capture scenarios and explore hybrid performance spaces.

Graduation Project and Career Plan

Draw together your practical, theoretical, and industry understanding into the creation and delivery of a filmed artefact. You will also complete a comprehensive career plan as part of your progression into professional employment in the screen industries.

Elective Upskilling Options

Production Skills (Directing, Cinematography, Editing) Self-Shooting and Content Creation Voice and Movement for Screen Cross-Discipline Collaboration Projects
