Sound (Production) MA — Program Overview

The MA Sound (Production) at Bath Spa University is designed to help aspiring musicians, composers, and producers refine their craft and build a professional portfolio for the sound and music industry. Working alongside fellow students and specialist staff, you will take an interdisciplinary approach to sound production encompassing contemporary electronic, experimental, and urban music.

You will explore advanced production and recording techniques, mixing, mastering, and engineering, while also having the opportunity to engage with areas such as composition for visual media, spatial audio, and sound design. The course is deliberately unbounded by genre, encouraging you to develop an individually tailored portfolio of skills, experience, and industry-standard work.

The program is part of a suite of MA Sound courses at Bath Spa, running alongside sister pathways in Sound (Design) and Sound (Composition and Sonic Art), with options available across all three programs. The course culminates in a large-scale practical Major Project rather than a traditional written dissertation, reflecting its emphasis on professional creative output.

Key Program Highlights

  • Interdisciplinary approach covering contemporary electronic, experimental, and urban music production with no stylistic boundaries
  • Access to Musiclab Studios with multiple control rooms, live recording rooms, audio mixing booths, and high-spec Mac workstations running Pro Tools, Ableton, Logic, and MAX/MSP
  • Practical portfolio-based assessment culminating in a large-scale Major Project supported by a reflective journal
  • Cross-pathway elective modules available from Sound (Design) and Sound (Composition and Sonic Art) programs

Curriculum & Modules

The MA Sound (Production) curriculum is structured across three trimesters, progressing from foundational skill development and contextual research through advanced creative projects to an independent Major Project. The program emphasises practical, portfolio-based learning with assessment primarily through coursework and creative output.

Creative Portfolio

Core Module

Focuses on developing your individual practice as a producer or composer/producer. You will produce a portfolio of production studies informed by contemporary practice, exploring notions of genre, technical staging, and creative sound production.

Core Module

An advanced creative project undertaken in the second trimester where you reflect on your development process and outcomes. The content of the assessments is defined and directed by you to push your personal and professional development.

Intertextuality in Sound Production

Core Module

Captures and contextualises emerging trends and innovation at the forefront of sound production and composition. The module develops composition skills that extend beyond genre limits, exploring the continuum between contemporary electronic music and avant-garde forms.

Major Project
