Forestry & Environmental Information Technology
Program Overview: Forest Information Technology MSc
The Forest Information Technology (FIT) Master's program is a joint international initiative between the Faculty of Forestry at Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS-SGGW) in Poland and the Faculty of Forest and Environment at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) in Germany. This double-degree program, taught entirely in English, enables graduates to obtain a Master of Science certificate from both partner universities. Running successfully since 2005, FIT is continuously accredited in Germany by ASIIN and in Poland by PKA.
The program focuses on environmental information technologies and Green IT, including Machine Learning, applied programming, databases, forest ecosystem modelling, remote sensing, and geographic information systems. With an interdisciplinary approach, the curriculum combines conceptual knowledge about sustainable forest ecosystems with innovative IT-based solutions to address challenges ranging from local forest management to global climate change.
Students learn to solve complex problems through a deepened understanding of structures, processes, and relationships within ecosystems and landscapes. They gain a broad spectrum of scientific methods and tools for the collection, analysis, storage, visualization, and communication of environmental data, preparing them for leadership roles in the evolving field of digital forestry.
Key Program Highlights
- Double degree from two European universities: WULS-SGGW (Poland) and HNEE (Germany)
- International study experience across two countries with teaching at both Warsaw and Eberswalde campuses
- Focus on cutting-edge Green IT, remote sensing, GIS, Machine Learning, and environmental data analytics
- Continuously accredited since 2005 by ASIIN (Germany) and PKA (Poland)
Curriculum & Modules
The FIT curriculum is structured across four semesters, with teaching split between Eberswalde (Semester 1) and Warsaw (Semester 2), followed by independent research and thesis work at either location. The program emphasizes a strong integration of information technology subjects with forest and landscape ecological content, complemented by a broad range of elective specialization options.
Covers principles of geographic information systems, spatial data acquisition, processing, and analysis for environmental and forestry applications across both semesters.
Focuses on statistical methods, database design, data storage, and management techniques applied to environmental and forest ecosystem datasets.
Addresses practical forest management operations, planning, and implementation of sustainable forestry practices using modern digital tools and decision-support systems.
In the third semester, students plan and conduct an independent research activity of moderate size at WULS-SGGW, HNEE, or a partner institution in Germany, Poland, or abroad.
The fourth semester is devoted primarily to the preparation, writing, and defense of the Master thesis, representing the culmination of the student's research and analytical work.
