Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism (SoMu) is an international joint-degree master study program co-organized by Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) in Kaunas, Lithuania, Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz, Germany, Stockholm University in Sweden, and the University of Tartu in Estonia. The program trains a new generation of sociolinguists with a broad scholarly and practical understanding of the parallel use of multiple languages in Europe.
During their four-semester studies, students study at three different universities: the first semester is taught in Kaunas, the second in Mainz, and for the third semester students choose between Stockholm and Tartu. The fourth semester is dedicated to writing and defending the MA thesis at either VMU or JGU, and graduates receive a joint diploma from both institutions.
The program is designed to provide students with the theoretical background and analytical tools to understand Nordic and Baltic sociolinguistics and multilingualism, while also furnishing their foreign language skills. With its geographical focus on the entire Baltic Sea region, it is unique among European sociolinguistic MA programs in the breadth of languages and societies it covers.

Curriculum and Modules
The SoMu curriculum familiarizes students with key theories and methods of sociolinguistics, including traditional, variationist, and constructivist approaches, as well as language variation and the dialogic relationship of language use and societal patterns. Students gain competences in two international vehicular languages and at least two lesser-used and taught languages across their semesters at partner universities.
Covers foundational theories and methods of sociolinguistics including variationist and constructivist approaches, language variation, and the relationship between language use and societal structures.
Explores the parallel use of national, minority, and migrant languages alongside international vehicular languages, with a focus on European multilingual contexts and policy frameworks.
Examines language policy and planning issues at national, regional, and EU levels, with particular attention to the Baltic Sea region and Nordic-Baltic linguistic landscapes.
Develops understanding of cross-cultural communication dynamics and identity construction in multilingual societies, drawing on case studies from the program's partner countries.
Provides training in qualitative and quantitative research methods specific to sociolinguistic inquiry, preparing students for independent research and thesis work.
