Program Overview: Visual Effects for Film and Television MA
The Visual Effects for Film and Television MA at the University of York blends technical expertise with creative practice, enabling you to master the craft of VFX. You will build a strong foundation in VFX techniques while exploring the creative, theoretical, and historical contexts of screen-based storytelling.
This program covers compositing, colour grading, 3D asset creation and integration, as well as next-generation developments in immersive and AI-driven techniques. You will refine your creative output through both self-directed and collaborative projects, preparing you for a competitive and fast-evolving industry.
You will learn in industry-standard facilities including media labs, postproduction and picture finishing suites, fully equipped TV studios, motion capture studios with green screen stages, and professional sound stages. These facilities have been used for projects for the BBC and other major production companies.

Curriculum & Modules
The MA in Visual Effects for Film and Television is structured across two taught semesters and an extended summer project. In Semester 1, you study two core modules including Work Placement I, plus one option module. Semester 2 includes three core modules including Work Placement II, followed by an individual project over the summer period.
Visual Effects Design Lab
30 CreditsDevelop expertise in picture compositing algorithms using industry-standard tools such as Nuke. You will explore digital matte creation, rotoscoping, object tracking, matchmoving, and compositing techniques used in professional VFX pipelines.
Group Project I
15 CreditsCollaborate with students from all Film and Television Production specialisms to create a production based on a typical industry brief. This module develops professional production values and collaborative working practices through hands-on filmmaking.
Group Project II
15 CreditsBuild upon techniques practised in Group Project I by applying them to a more advanced production based on industry-standard briefs. This module further develops preproduction, production, and postproduction skills through realistic scenarios.
Work Placement I
15 CreditsGain real-world industry experience by working closely with VFX and film production professionals. Placements may include work with local and national studios, building your professional network and practical skills.
Work Placement II
15 CreditsContinue developing industry connections and professional competencies through a second placement opportunity. This module runs alongside your Semester 2 teaching commitments, providing sustained exposure to professional practice.
Individual Project
90 CreditsUndertake an extended self-directed project over the summer period, which may take the form of a production project involving a short film or pilot episode with a reflective essay, or a research-based dissertation focusing on your VFX specialism.
