Program Overview: Behaviour, Cognition and Neuroscience at University of Windsor

The Behaviour, Cognition and Neuroscience (BCN) program at the University of Windsor is a nationally recognized interdisciplinary program that explores behavioural, cognitive, cellular, and molecular aspects of life from both a biological and psychological perspective. You will study behaviour and cognition in humans and other animals, as well as neuroscience at the chemical, genetic, and systems physiological levels.

This research-based, limited-enrolment program offers a low faculty-to-student ratio, allowing you to benefit from close mentorship and personalized academic support. The program combines the biological aspects of psychology with biology relating to the brain and behaviour, making it ideal for students interested in both disciplines.

Hands-on learning is central to the BCN experience, with opportunities to work in laboratories and in the field, exposing you to cutting-edge research. UWindsor offers one of the few undergraduate neuroscience programs in Canada, giving graduates in-demand neuroscience credentials that prepare them for a wide range of careers in science, healthcare, and research.

Key Program Highlights

  • One of the few undergraduate neuroscience programs in Canada, offering nationally recognized credentials in behaviour, cognition, and neuroscience
  • Interdisciplinary program spanning Biology and Psychology departments, allowing students to study in their specific area of interest
  • Research-based, limited-enrolment program with a low faculty-to-student ratio for personalized mentorship and learning
  • Hands-on learning through laboratory and field work, bi-weekly BCN seminars, and opportunities for undergraduate research with faculty

Curriculum and Modules

The BCN curriculum integrates foundational courses in biology and psychology with specialized neuroscience modules. Students take required courses focusing on specific aspects of brain function at the molecular, behavioural, and cognitive levels, culminating in a senior research or practicum experience.

Introduction to Psychology as a Behavioural Science

Provides a foundational overview of psychological principles, research methods, and key theories that underpin the study of human and animal behaviour.

Principles of Neuroscience

Covers the fundamental concepts of neuroscience, including neural signaling, brain anatomy, and the biological mechanisms underlying cognition and behaviour.

Biological Diversity

Explores the diversity of living organisms from an evolutionary and ecological perspective, building a biological foundation for understanding neural and behavioural systems.

Human Physiology

Examines the physiological processes of the human body, with emphasis on systems relevant to neuroscience such as the nervous, endocrine, and sensory systems.

Behavioural Neurobiology

Investigates the neural basis of behaviour in humans and other animals, integrating concepts from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to understand brain-behaviour relationships.

Cognitive Processes

Examines higher-order cognitive functions including perception, attention, memory, language, and decision-making, drawing on experimental and neuroimaging research.
