Role in a Workplace:
A Biomedical Laboratory Technician is a healthcare professional who, pursuant to Article 3 of Law No. 251 of August 10, 2000, carries out, with ownership and professional autonomy, the technical procedures necessary to perform diagnostic methods on biological materials, in compliance with the regulations regarding the identification of professional roles and profiles defined by the Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Health (Ministerial Decree No. 745 of September 26, 1994) and subsequent additions and amendments.
A Biomedical Laboratory Technician is a professional who performs laboratory analysis and research activities in the biomedical and biotechnological fields. In particular in:
Biochemistry
Clinical and Molecular Pathology
Microbiology, Parasitology and Virology
Pharmaco-toxicology
Immunology
Medical Genetics
Hematology
Pathological Anatomy and Cytology
He is also responsible for the correct fulfillment of the analytical procedures for which he is responsible, within the defined work protocols, organizes and consults databases of clinical-health and scientific interest, archives reports, collaborates and interacts with various professional figures within his work context, contributes to the training of newly hired colleagues, support staff and students through specific tutorial activity.
Skills associated with the role
To perform the functions described, the Biomedical Laboratory Technician is required to have the following skills and abilities, both disciplinary and transversal:
• basic scientific skills in physics, chemistry, statistics, and advanced technical-specialist knowledge (biochemistry, microbiology, parasitology, clinical pathology, pharmacology, virology, hematology, immunology, etc.);
• knowledge of the different methods used in the various sectors of laboratory medicine and bioinformatics.
• knowledge of the professional code of ethics and the rules that protect privacy;
• excellent knowledge of the functioning and principles of use of laboratory equipment and of organization and management, including the rules that protect health and safety in the workplace and those that regulate the organization of healthcare;
• ability to organize effectively, establishing priorities with efficient time management;
• good interpersonal skills;
• good self-learning and continuous updating skills
