Curriculum and Modules

The MSBS in Bioinformatics requires a minimum of 42 credits, including at least 20 credits of graded didactic coursework and a minimum of 10 credits of thesis research. Bioinformatic Computation (BIPG 6100)

Provides training in computational methods used in bioinformatics, including programming languages such as PERL, Java, and SQL, as well as statistical and algorithmic approaches for analyzing nucleic acid and protein sequences.

Applications of Bioinformatics, Proteomics and Genomics (BIPG 6400)

Covers practical applications of bioinformatic approaches including transcriptomics, proteomic mass spectroscopic methods, interaction network analysis, and functional classification using machine learning techniques such as support vector machines and cluster analysis.

Cell Biology and Signaling (BMSP 6350)

3 Credits

Explores molecular, biochemical, and cellular mechanisms involved in the regulation of cellular processes and development, providing the biomedical foundation essential for bioinformatics research.

Bioinformatic Databases (BIPG 5400)

Introduces database design, management, and the handling and manipulation of large-scale biological databases used in nucleic acid and protein sequence analysis.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the MSBS degree with a concentration in Bioinformatics, Proteomics and Genomics must meet program-specific requirements in addition to those of the UToledo Graduate School. All applications and inquiries should be submitted through Uni4Edu.

  • Minimum GPA3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students with a GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 may be considered for provisional acceptance.
  • Recommended BackgroundUndergraduate major in Biology or a related discipline such as Biochemistry or Biophysics. Students with other majors are encouraged to apply but should have several semesters of biology coursework.
