The B.S. in Biosystems Analytics and Technology brings together data science and applied engineering to make the most of our planet's food, water, and energy. By studying precision agriculture, remote sensing, programming languages, and cyberinfrastructure development, you will be prepared for an in-demand career optimizing technology as it relates to environmental, ecological, biological, and human systems.
This program is housed within the Biosystems Engineering Department in the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences (CALES). Students obtain foundational training in science (biology, chemistry, physics, and microbiology or genetics), technology (sensors and controls, remote sensing, and computer skills), and data science and analytics (data science, statistics, bioinformatics, and analytics courses).
The curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers in the 4th Industrial Revolution, where science, technology, and analytics converge. With hands-on experiences across disciplines such as genomics, precision agriculture, data science, and engineering technology, graduates are equipped to address grand challenges in food production, environmental sustainability, and resource management.

Curriculum & Modules
The Biosystems Analytics and Technology curriculum provides foundational training across three pillars: science, technology, and data science and analytics. Students complete general education requirements alongside core coursework that bridges the data science and technology gap in areas such as applied cyberinfrastructure, controlled environments, computing for analytics, and biostatistics.
One year of biology and one year of chemistry, plus a half-year of physics and a half-year of microbiology, biochemistry, or genetics, providing the scientific foundation for understanding biological systems.
Five courses covering data science, statistics, bioinformatics, and two semesters of analytics, equipping students with the quantitative tools to analyze and interpret complex biological data sets.
Coursework in sensors and controls, remote sensing, and two semesters of computer skills including Python, Excel, Visual Basic, and MATLAB for data-driven problem solving.
Training in drone technology, sensor-based data collection, and spatial data visualization to optimize crop yields and sustainability in both traditional and controlled environment agriculture.
Courses covering metagenomics, genomic analysis, and proteomic identification, preparing students to work with large-scale biological datasets and molecular-level information.
Internship & Capstone Experience
2 credits minimumAll students must complete a required internship (BE 493) consisting of specialized training and practice in a technical, business, or governmental establishment, applying classroom knowledge to real-world settings.
