Program Overview: Industrial Pharmacy at the University of Toledo

The Industrial Pharmacy master's program at the University of Toledo prepares students to design the drug-delivery methods of the future. Housed within UToledo's nationally ranked College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, this program equips graduates with a competitive edge in the pharmaceutical job market through rigorous scientific training and hands-on research.

Students develop expertise across five functional areas of pharmaceutics: chemistry, computer science, engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and data analysis. The program emphasizes practical application through a contemporary industrial pharmacy project, where students develop and characterize novel drug-delivery systems in state-of-the-art laboratories.

Graduates are well prepared to assume entry-level pharmaceutical manufacturing positions performing pre-formulation evaluation, dosage form design, and stability testing. Many graduates also continue to prestigious Ph.D. programs throughout the United States or launch careers as scientists in the pharmaceutical industry worldwide.

Key Program Highlights

  • Nationally ranked College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences with R1 Carnegie Classification research status
  • Hands-on training in five core pharmaceutics areas: chemistry, computer science, engineering, manufacturing, and data analysis
  • Access to the Center for Drug Design and Development with industry and academic research partnerships
  • Study on one of the most technologically advanced health-science campuses in the U.S. with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment

Curriculum and Modules

The Industrial Pharmacy program requires 30-32 credits of coursework, including at least six thesis credit hours. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience, culminating in a contemporary industrial pharmacy research project that prepares you for real-world pharmaceutical manufacturing challenges.

Physical Pharmacy

3 Credits

Covers the physicochemical principles underlying drug formulation, including solubility, dissolution, and stability of pharmaceutical compounds. Students gain a foundation for understanding how physical properties influence dosage form design.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Process Engineering

3 Credits

Focuses on industrial-scale pharmaceutical production processes, including unit operations such as mixing, granulation, tableting, and coating. Students learn to optimize manufacturing workflows and ensure product consistency.

Dosage Form Design and Development

3 Credits

Explores the design and evaluation of various pharmaceutical dosage forms including tablets, capsules, injectables, and novel drug-delivery systems. Emphasis is placed on pre-formulation studies and formulation optimization.

Pharmaceutical Data Analysis and Computer Applications

3 Credits

Introduces statistical methods and computational tools used in pharmaceutical research and quality control. Students apply data analysis techniques to interpret experimental results and support decision-making in drug development.

Stability Testing and Quality Assurance

3 Credits

Covers principles and methods for assessing the stability of pharmaceutical products under various conditions. Students learn regulatory guidelines for stability testing and quality assurance protocols essential to the pharmaceutical industry.

Thesis Research in Industrial Pharmacy

6 Credits

Students conduct an independent research project under faculty supervision, developing and characterizing novel drug-delivery systems. This capstone experience integrates knowledge from all coursework areas into a publishable research contribution.
