The Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) at the University of Tasmania provides broad knowledge and practical skills across key areas of information technology (IT) and information systems (IS). Curriculum and Specialisation Structure

The MITS is a two-year (200 credit point) course structured around a foundation semester, a primary technical specialisation, and a second specialisation or cross-listed elective units. This modular design allows you to tailor your studies toward specific career outcomes while building a solid foundation in core ICT concepts.

Foundation Semester (Transition Units)

50 Credit Points

Covers fundamental ICT concepts including software design and programming, computer networks, web system development, and database technology. Required for students without an ICT background.

Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Specialisation

50 Credit Points

Prepares you for a career as a data analyst with skills to design and implement intelligent ICT solutions using AI and machine learning techniques, big data analytics, and data management technologies.

Cyber Security Specialisation

50 Credit Points

Focuses on system administration, network security, and cybersecurity practices. Covers administration of common computing environments and security strategies for modern business settings.

Software Development Specialisation

50 Credit Points

Develops advanced skills in programming, software design, and application development. Prepares graduates for roles as software developers, application programmers, and front-end or back-end developers.

Systems Analysis Specialisation

Admission Requirements

Admission to the MITS program requires qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. The program duration depends on your academic background: students with an ICT-related bachelor degree may qualify for the 12-unit (1.5-year) pathway, while those from non-ICT backgrounds complete the full 16-unit (2-year) program including a foundation transition semester.
