MSc Marine Mammal Science at St Andrews: Program Overview
The MSc in Marine Mammal Science at the University of St Andrews is a one-year taught programme run by the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), the only UK institution dedicated exclusively to marine mammal research. The programme draws on the quantitative and diverse academic expertise within the University's Scottish Oceans Institute (SOI), offering a unique combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on research training.
Although focused on marine mammals, this programme also covers advanced topics in quantitative marine ecology and animal behaviour. Modules include intensive training in quantitative techniques such as statistical modelling and GIS, as well as applied research methods including a Scotland-based field course to practise survey techniques at no additional cost.
The course consists of two taught semesters and an independent research project culminating in a 15,000-word dissertation and poster presentation. Students benefit from stimulating, small class sizes with a focus on student-led, experiential learning, and have the opportunity to experience fieldwork further afield as part of optional modules including Polar Ecology.
Key Program Highlights
- Taught by leading experts at the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), the only UK institution dedicated exclusively to marine mammal research
- The only research-focused MSc degree in marine mammal science worldwide, combining fieldwork, quantitative methods, and conservation science
- Includes a Scotland-based field course for survey techniques at no additional cost, with optional polar fieldwork opportunities
- Split teaching between St Andrews and the Scottish Marine Institute in Oban, providing access to two Scottish coastlines and diverse project opportunities
Curriculum and Modules
The modular curriculum is designed to be coherent, providing integrated training for future careers in scientific research, management, or conservation. Core modules are complemented by advanced optional modules in topical research areas, and practicals involve lab work, field work, modelling, and computer-based data analysis.
Principles of Marine Mammal Biology
Core ModuleIntroduces the zoogeography of marine mammals and the morphological, physiological, and behavioural adaptations that have enabled this diverse group to colonise the world's oceans and some freshwater systems.
Conservation and Management of Marine Mammals
Core ModuleExplores the complex interactions between humans and marine mammals, covering policy frameworks, conservation strategies, and management approaches for protecting marine mammal populations.
Mathematical and Statistical Modelling for Biologists
Core ModuleApplies mathematical ideas to questions in biology and introduces methods for fitting models to biological data, primarily using R software for statistical analysis and data interpretation.
Research Methods and Field Course
Core ModuleProvides hands-on training in applied research methods including a Scotland-based field course to practise marine mammal survey techniques such as distance sampling and photo-identification.
GIS and Spatial Analysis
Core ModuleCovers geographic information systems and spatial analysis techniques essential for studying marine mammal distribution, habitat use, and movement patterns across marine environments.
MSc Research Dissertation
60 CreditsAn independent research project conducted throughout the year with particular focus during the final three months, culminating in a 15,000-word dissertation and poster presentation at the MSc student conference.
Optional Modules (Choose Three in Semester 2)
