The core language modules are delivered with a higher number of contact hours compared to other modules, providing scope to practice speaking, writing, reading and understanding spoken and written Spanish, supported by the use of a range of material in the target language as well as language learning technology. The optional culture studies modules are informed by staff research specialisms and designed to develop your intellectual skills and to critically apply literary and historical concepts, analyse and interpret a range of cultural texts, develop and demonstrate independence of thought and sensitivity to cultural difference. Studying a Modern Language opens a variety of career paths. These include careers in business and marketing, publishing, international organisations, teaching and translation. The degree will equip you with a range of transferable skills, including structuring ideas and communicating them effectively, participating effectively in groups and team work, working independently, retrieving, structuring and presenting information, time management, responsibility as well as adaptability and self-reliance. The International Development element of this joint-disciplinary programme aims to provide you with a degree-level understanding of the complex global dynamics affecting the planet’s resources, climate, food systems, and human population. Through the course of the degree, students are exposed to critical thinking, capturing key ideas in international development policy and practice, illustrated with rich use of case studies from around the world. The cross-university programme incorporates a wealth of multi-disciplinary expertise, including from geography, economics, international relations and agriculture, providing an interdisciplinary grounding in thinking on international development.
