Curriculum & Program Structure

The BMBS program uses an integrated, spiral curriculum that builds knowledge progressively while emphasising early clinical exposure. The first two years focus on the scientific foundations of medicine within a clinical context, while Years 3 to 5 provide increasing clinical immersion across hospital and community settings. Students spend Years 1 and 2 in Plymouth, and in Years 3 to 5 rotate between Plymouth, Torbay, and Taunton clinical sites.

Foundations of Medicine (Year 1)

120 credits

Covers the core scientific foundations of medicine structured around the human life cycle, from conception through to old age. Includes early community placements and clinical skills development alongside biomedical science teaching.

Applied Medical Sciences (Year 2)

120 credits

Revisits the human life cycle with deeper exploration of pathophysiology and disease processes. Includes a series of placements in a single general practice, enabling you to learn about long-term health issues and see teamwork in action.

Clinical Practice I (Year 3)

120 credits

Increased clinical immersion with rotations across hospital and general practice-based community placements. Students develop clinical reasoning and practical skills while continuing to integrate scientific knowledge with clinical practice.

Clinical Practice II (Year 4)

120 credits

Continuation of hospital and community-based clinical rotations with greater responsibility and complexity. Students further develop communication, clinical, problem-solving and analytical skills in patient-centred environments.

Preparation for Practice (Year 5)

Final year focusing on preparation for the Foundation Programme, with student assistantship placements at Derriford or Torbay hospital. Includes an elective placement opportunity to explore a different social or cultural context within the UK or internationally.

Admission Requirements

Entry to the BMBS program at the University of Plymouth is highly competitive.
