Preston Campus, United Kingdom
Year 1 introduces the foundations of Deaf Studies and British Sign Language. You’ll explore deafness in society, Deaf culture and identity, alongside topics such as language, gender and education. At the same time, you’ll begin developing BSL communication skills, progressing from basic to more complex everyday interactions.
Year 2 builds your understanding of Deaf world issues and inclusion. You’ll study contemporary debates, education and diversity, while advancing your BSL skills to a higher level of fluency and comprehension. You’ll also deepen your knowledge of Deaf culture and linguistic structure, with optional modules in areas such as language systems or translation.
Year 3 focuses on advanced fluency and professional preparation. You’ll reach near-native level BSL communication, capable of handling complex and formal interactions. You’ll complete a dissertation and may explore interpreting roles, public service contexts or clinical linguistics, preparing for careers in interpreting, education or community support.
