MSci Archaeology at the University of Lancashire: Program Overview
The MSci Archaeology at the University of Lancashire is a four-year integrated master's degree accredited by both the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) and University Archaeology UK. With hands-on fieldwork at its core, this program is designed to provide the ideal foundation for a professional archaeology career, combining academic understanding with extensive practical experience.
Archaeology at the University of Lancashire is a multidisciplinary practical degree that produces graduates with sought-after transferable skills including critical analysis, communication, and teamwork. From your very first week, you will be in the field learning these skills on a real archaeological excavation, and you will spend time each year on placement in the UK or abroad, working on live digs and contributing to cutting-edge research.
In the fourth year, MSci students transition to a supervisory role, experiencing day-to-day management of an archaeological project. You will also undertake a major piece of independent research, often involving your own field or laboratory work, further enhancing your employability and professional standing in the discipline.
Key Program Highlights

- Spend 14 weeks in the field working on real research excavations across the UK, making significant archaeological finds
- Access to on-campus training excavation site, archaeological science lab, human bone labs, 3D scanners, and soil flotation unit

Curriculum and Modules
The MSci Archaeology program is structured over four years, combining compulsory core modules with optional specialist units. The course is split evenly between practicals, lectures, and fieldwork, and is designed to give you a wide general knowledge of archaeology with a particular focus on the archaeology of Britain. Assessment is primarily coursework-based, using real-life projects such as client reports and field assessments rather than traditional end-of-year exams.
An introduction to the archaeology of the British Isles, covering evidence from the first inhabitants in the Palaeolithic through to the Industrial Revolution, developing your communication and analytical skills.
Hands-on excavation training on live archaeological sites in the UK and potentially abroad, where you develop practical digging, recording, and interpretation skills alongside professional archaeologists.
Laboratory-based study of artefacts, animal bones, plant remains, and environmental samples using the university's archaeological science lab, flotation unit, and 3D scanning equipment.
Study of research methodology relevant to academic and commercial archaeology environments, covering project planning, communication of archaeological ideas, and legal and ethical issues in research.
