Program Overview: M.Sc. Molecular Biology at the University of Göttingen
The M.Sc. in Molecular Biology at the University of Göttingen is an internationally recognized program conducted jointly by the university, the University Medical Center Göttingen, the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences, and the German Primate Center. Recognized as an International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS), the program offers research-oriented training across a broad spectrum of modern molecular life sciences with access to state-of-the-art laboratories.
During the first year, students participate in 36 lecture weeks accompanied by tutorials, hands-on methods courses, and three eight-week individually supervised research projects known as lab rotations. After the intensive first year, students complete a six-month Master's thesis to earn the M.Sc. degree, or may qualify for the fast-track PhD option if they achieve excellent results.
This program attracts talented students from around the world and provides a dedicated support team offering individual counselling, career guidance, and a two-week orientation program before lectures begin. All M.Sc. students are supported by a stipend from the Max Planck Society, making this a highly competitive and well-funded opportunity in the life sciences.
Key Program Highlights
- International Max Planck Research School with stipend support for all admitted M.Sc. students from the Max Planck Society
- Joint program with the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences, University Medical Center, and German Primate Center
- Fast-track PhD option available for students achieving excellent grades during the first year of study
- Comprehensive training in 15+ subject areas including biochemistry, structural biology, genetics, bioinformatics, neurobiology, and cell biology
Curriculum and Modules
The M.Sc. Molecular Biology curriculum is divided into two segments. The first year features intensive lectures, tutorials, methods courses, skills workshops, and three lab rotations, while the second segment is dedicated to the six-month Master's thesis research project.
Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
Core ModuleCovers fundamental principles of molecular biology, gene expression, protein structure and function, and enzyme kinetics through lectures, tutorials, and practical laboratory sessions.
Cell Biology and Genetics
Core ModuleExplores cellular mechanisms, signal transduction pathways, genetic regulation, and genome organization using modern experimental approaches and model organisms.
Structural Biology and Biophysics
Core ModuleIntroduces techniques in X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and biophysical methods for studying macromolecular structures and dynamics.
Methods Courses and Laboratory Techniques
Core ModuleHands-on training in cutting-edge experimental techniques including molecular cloning, advanced microscopy, proteomics, genomics, and bioinformatics tools during the first three months.
Lab Rotations (Three Research Projects)
Core ModuleThree eight-week individually supervised research projects in different laboratories, allowing students to explore diverse research areas and identify their thesis topic.
Master's Thesis Research
30 ECTSA six-month independent research project conducted in one of the participating research groups, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.
