The interdisciplinary Master's programme in Gender Studies at the University of Göttingen combines perspectives and methods from different disciplines and teaches theory-based, empirically founded, and application-oriented research. It enables students to critically analyse the complex category of gender in society, culture, and science across a range of thematic focal points.

Offered by the Faculty of Humanities, this programme draws on contributions from 19 subjects across seven faculties, providing a uniquely cross-disciplinary educational experience. Curriculum and Modules

Foundations of Gender Studies

Gender, Body and Sexuality

Examines the social and cultural construction of the body, sexuality, and desire through feminist, queer, and intersectional theoretical frameworks.

Gender and Social Orders

6 ECTS

Analyses how gender intersects with social hierarchies, institutional structures, and processes of inclusion and exclusion in modern societies.

Gender, Economy and Material Culture

6 ECTS

Explores the gendered dimensions of economic systems, labour markets, consumption, and material culture from historical and contemporary perspectives.

Research Methods in Gender Studies

6 ECTS

Trains students in qualitative and quantitative research methods relevant to gender studies, including discourse analysis, ethnography, and empirical social research.

Master's Thesis Module

30 ECTS

Students complete an independent research project demonstrating their ability to apply gender studies theories and methods to a scholarly question of their choice.
