Agricultural Sciences (M.Sc.)
North Campus, Germany
Overview
The Master's degree programme in Agricultural Sciences is a consecutive Master's degree programme in which achievements totalling 120 credits must be completed.
The basic theories, methods, procedures and problems of agricultural sciences are taught in an interdisciplinary approach. In doing so, students acquire a broad, detailed and critical understanding and decided knowledge of scientific work as well as the ability for scientifically sound analyses in the agricultural science disciplines. This knowledge and understanding forms the basis for the development and/or application of independent ideas and enables students to apply their problem-solving skills to new situations that have a broader or multidisciplinary context in the field of agricultural economics. Those who have completed the study of agricultural sciences will be able to define and interpret the specifics, boundaries, terminologies and doctrines of agricultural sciences.
The broad-based Faculty of Agricultural Sciences with more than 30 scientific institutions offers students a wide range of disciplines and specialisations - divided into the Departments of Livestock Sciences, Crop Sciences and Agricultural Economics and Rural Development.
The degree programme is modularised, which has the following advantages:
- As a rule, one-semester courses
- corresponding examinations at the end of each module
- Continuous monitoring of success by determining the current grade average (Grade Average Point)
The internationally recognised Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree can be obtained through the successful completion of the study programme.
The various career paths with a degree in agricultural science are enormously diverse. Many graduates go into one of the following fields:
- Service Sector/Scientific Institutions/Agribusiness
- upstream of agriculture (e.g. fertilisers/plant breeding)
- Agriculture
- Downstream of agriculture (e.g. trade, food industry)
- outside agribusiness (e.g. banks, insurance companies)
In all the fields of activity listed, new interdisciplinary questions are constantly arising, which are answered through study and future-oriented research. Current topics are, for example:
- Breeding of new cereal varieties with constant yields under different environmental influences
- Species-appropriate husbandry of farm animals
- Use of risk management strategies to mitigate the economic impact of fluctuations in primary agricultural production
- The positioning of agricultural enterprises on the international agricultural market
- The sensible use of renewable energies
