Program Overview: Mechanical Design Engineering BEng (Hons)
The Mechanical Design Engineering BEng (Hons) at the University of Glasgow is firmly rooted in the mainstream mechanical engineering discipline but places greater emphasis on the interplay between design and manufacturing. You will explore this relationship through individual and group projects, gaining a strong foundation in engineering principles alongside creative design thinking.
Throughout the program, you will complete an extensive design project that allows you to integrate various design skills and understand the business and social context within which design takes place. The degree has very close links with industry, with practising engineers contributing to courses and offering vacation and year-out employment opportunities.
The BEng and MEng degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers, ensuring your qualification is recognised by professional engineering bodies. Students who perform well on the BEng may transfer to the MEng programme on completion of years 1, 2 or 3, providing a flexible pathway to an integrated master's degree.
Key Program Highlights
- Accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers with professional recognition pathways
- Strong industry links with practising engineers contributing to courses and providing employment opportunities
- Emphasis on design-manufacturing interplay through individual and group project work
- Option to transfer to the 5-year MEng programme based on academic performance
Curriculum and Modules
The Mechanical Design Engineering BEng follows a progressive four-year curriculum. You will study the same courses in the first three years as MEng students, covering a wide-ranging curriculum that includes mechanical design and manufacturing, mathematics, dynamics, electronics, materials, statics, thermodynamics, and engineering skills, all supported by individual and group project work and laboratory sessions.
Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Fundamentals
120 Credits (Year 1)Year 1 covers a wide-ranging curriculum including mechanical engineering, mathematics, dynamics, electronics, materials, statics, thermodynamics, and foundational engineering skills. This interdisciplinary approach makes it possible to switch to other engineering disciplines at the end of year 1.
Applied Engineering Sciences
120 Credits (Year 2)Year 2 covers further engineering subjects including applicable mathematics, applied mechanics, fluid mechanics, microelectronics, engineering computing, materials, power electronics, thermodynamics, and design and manufacture.
Advanced Engineering and Design
120 Credits (Year 3)Year 3 consists of more advanced engineering subjects such as engineering design, dynamics and control, mechanics of solids, heat transfer, design and manufacture, materials and manufacture, simulation of engineering systems, and mechanics of materials and structures.
Individual Design Project
Included in Year 4In year 4, students undertake an individual design project that allows them to integrate the various design skills acquired throughout the programme and demonstrate independent engineering capability.
Group Design Project
Included in Year 4The group design project develops teamwork and collaborative engineering skills, simulating real-world design challenges where students work together to deliver a comprehensive engineering solution.
Advanced Specialist Topics
Included in Year 4A range of advanced subjects are offered in year 4 including robotics, advanced materials, vibration, microelectronics, mechanics of solids, and thermal engineering, allowing students to specialise in areas of interest.
