Program Overview: Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons)

The Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) at the University of Bradford provides a comprehensive education in mechanical engineering fundamentals, combining mechanics, materials science, thermofluids, and computational methods. You will learn to design, analyse, and implement complex systems that are economic, reliable, efficient, and sustainable. The program is delivered over three years of full-time study, with an optional four-year sandwich variant that includes an industrial placement year.

Throughout the degree, you will put theory into practice through a range of individual and group projects. From your very first year, you will take part in hands-on projects where you design, build, and test real mechanical devices. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Formula Student competition, working with fellow students to design and build a single-seater racing car.

This program is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and is recognised by the UK Engineering Council as meeting, in part, the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration. On graduation, you will be industry-ready with a solid grounding in engineering science and practical working knowledge of core analytical and scientific principles, computer-aided design and manufacturing, and integrated systems engineering skills.

Key Program Highlights

  • Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) with a pathway towards Chartered Engineer status
  • Hands-on project work from Year 1, including the opportunity to participate in the Formula Student racing car competition
  • Optional sandwich placement year in industry to build professional experience and employer contacts
  • Designed using the CDIO (Conceiving-Designing-Implementing-Operating) educational framework adopted by universities worldwide

Curriculum and Modules

The Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) curriculum is structured across three years of progressive study, building from foundational engineering science to advanced specialist topics. Modules combine formal lectures, practical laboratory sessions, tutorials, and seminars, with assessments including practical coursework, lab tests, and written examinations.

Design, Build and Test

Core - Year 1

An introductory project-based module where you design, build, and test real mechanical devices, developing practical engineering skills from the outset of your studies.

Mathematical Methods and Applications

Core - Year 1

Covers essential mathematical techniques and their application to engineering problems, providing the analytical foundation needed for all subsequent engineering modules.

Thermofluids

Core - Year 1

Introduces the principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, which are fundamental to understanding energy systems, heat transfer, and fluid flow in engineering applications.

Mechanics of Machines and Vibration

Core - Year 2

Explores the dynamics of mechanical systems, including kinematics, kinetics, and vibration analysis, equipping you to analyse and design moving machinery and mechanisms.

Instrumentation, Measurement and Control Systems

Core - Year 2

Focuses on measurement techniques, sensor technologies, and control system theory used to monitor and regulate engineering processes and automated systems.

Individual Research Project

Core - Year 3

A substantial independent research project allowing you to investigate a mechanical engineering topic in depth, demonstrating your ability to apply knowledge, conduct research, and present findings professionally.

Elective Modules (Year 3)
