- Covers real-world applications from diverse sectors including healthcare, industry, environment, and climate science
- Access to the Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI) and partnership with the Alan Turing Institute
- No prior coding experience required — the programme is designed as a conversion course for non-specialists
Curriculum and Modules
The MSc Statistical Data Science curriculum integrates core statistical theory, computational methods, and hands-on data analysis. Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, projects, group work, and hands-on lab sessions, with assessments based on exams, individual and group project work, practical data analysis, visualisation, and communication skills.
Working with Data
15 CreditsAn introduction to programming in R and Python for data manipulation, cleaning, and exploratory analysis. This module provides the foundational coding skills needed throughout the programme.
Statistical Modelling and Inference
15 CreditsCovers the principles of statistical modelling, hypothesis testing, and inference. You will learn to build, evaluate, and interpret statistical models for real-world datasets.
Machine Learning and Statistical Learning
15 CreditsIntroduces key machine learning and statistical learning methods including decision trees, random forests, support vector machines, and neural networks, with both theoretical foundations and practical implementation.
Data Governance and Ethics
15 CreditsExplores the ethical, legal, and governance issues surrounding data use in contemporary society. You will examine your responsibilities as a data scientist for ensuring data and technologies are used ethically.
Bayesian Statistics and Computation
15 CreditsCovers Bayesian approaches to statistical analysis, including prior specification, posterior inference, and computational methods such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithms.
Dissertation in Statistical Data Science
60 CreditsA substantial independent research project of approximately 15,000 words in which you apply your learning to a real-world problem, demonstrating project planning, analytical skills, and the ability to interpret and communicate results.
