The PhD in Classics at the University of Edinburgh offers you the opportunity to study Classics at an advanced level through independent research. With its broad range of supervisors and stimulating intellectual environment, the programme provides a first-class experience in focused and sustained research across all areas of the discipline.
Edinburgh's Classics research group is one of the most significant clusters of scholars in the UK, working across Greek and Latin language, literature and thought, Greek, Roman and Byzantine history, and classical archaeology from the Archaic period through to Late Antiquity. Strong relationships with Archaeology, History, Philosophy and Law enable interdisciplinary study and supervision.
Each student is allocated at least two supervisors, combining thematic, chronological and disciplinary expertise in the supervisory team. The programme is designed to take three years full-time or six years part-time, with a distance learning option also available for those who cannot be based in Edinburgh.
