Surveying and Mapping Sciences BSc
Docklands Campus, United Kingdom
The Surveying and Mapping Sciences BSc is designed to provide students with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional awareness required for a career in modern surveying and geospatial sciences. The programme combines theoretical learning with extensive practical training, preparing graduates to work with advanced spatial data technologies across a range of industries.
In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamental principles of surveying and mapping. Core topics include mathematics for surveying, spatial data concepts, and introductory surveying techniques. Students begin developing essential skills in data collection, measurement, and interpretation, forming a strong foundation for more advanced study.
The second year builds on this foundation by introducing advanced surveying and mapping techniques. Students study photogrammetry, remote sensing, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), alongside legal and professional aspects of surveying practice. Emphasis is placed on the use of emerging technologies such as drones (UAVs) and digital mapping tools, enabling students to collect, analyse, and present spatial data accurately and efficiently.
An optional placement year provides valuable industry experience, allowing students to apply their academic knowledge in professional environments. This placement enhances practical skills, improves employability, and enables students to build professional networks within surveying, geomatics, construction, environmental, and planning sectors.
In the final year, students undertake a dissertation that allows them to explore a surveying or mapping topic in depth through independent research or applied project work. Additional modules focus on project management and specialised areas such as marine surveying, advanced GIS applications, or environmental monitoring. Throughout the programme, students engage in extensive fieldwork and gain hands-on experience using state-of-the-art equipment and industry-standard software.
