Civil Engineering (Integrated) Meng

The MEng Civil Engineering programme blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of vital civil engineering infrastructures, including buildings, roads, bridges, and canals. Students foster creativity and innovation using advanced digital tools such as manufacturing suites, 3D printers, plasma and laser cutting machines, robotic arms, and clay printers to translate imaginative concepts into tangible specifications for structures and systems. The course prepares students for technical and professional opportunities through modules in environmental engineering, ground engineering, structural engineering, transport engineering, behaviour of materials, land surveying, and construction management. It develops core competencies in construction and engineering knowledge, environmental impacts, material properties, mathematical skills for engineering problems, and fundamentals of thermo-fluid mechanics. In the second year, students enhance mathematical skills, structural analysis, ground engineering, engineering surveying, water engineering, and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures, including soil mechanics and hydraulics. The programme offers an optional year-long placement between years two and three for practical experience, extending the duration to four years. In the third year, students undertake a Capstone Project, study structural engineering for whole-structure design, geotechnical engineering for soil mechanics and stability, and transport infrastructure engineering for systems analysis, design, and operation. The final year includes a dissertation and modules on sustainability and logistics, highways and railways, and structures, equipping students with tools for socially and ethically viable engineering solutions and leadership in innovation.
