Overview

Prosthodontics is a component mono-specialty of the field of Restorative Dentistry.

In this course, you will have the opportunity to reinforce your clinical skills. With these skills, you will be able to deliver high-quality integrated care in a team environment. There is also a focus on the scientific and biological background of dental diseases and their treatment.

You will develop your skills to a specialist level in fixed and removable prosthodontics. This will be done through multi-disciplinary patient-centred clinical practice including:

  • aesthetics dentistry, including smile design
  • digital dentistry workflow in prosthodontics
  • full mouth rehabilitation
  • implant dentistry
  • management of tooth surface loss
  • minimal intervention dentistry
  • science and selection of biomaterials

You will learn a broad range of specialist-level skills including:

  • prosthodontic management following head and neck cancer care
  • prosthodontic management required for acquired maxillofacial and dentoalveolar defects due to:
  • maxillofacial trauma
  • developmental and congenital abnormalities including cleft lip and palate
  • other developmental disturbances of the teeth (e.g. amelogenesis imperfecta, and hypodontia)

You will develop as a leader in the healthcare setting by developing competence in:

  • human factors and ergonomics
  • leadership and management skills
  • clinical governance

Year 1 covers the scientific basis of clinical practice in restorative dentistry, and non-technical skills. In Years 2 and 3, you'll learn and practice advanced prosthodontics. An evidence-based and reflective approach will be used.

Completing this course should allow you to meet the eligibility criteria to apply to a Membership in Prosthodontics specialty exam. In the UK, these are conducted at the UK Royal Colleges.

The broad training and the coursework you complete will help you prepare for:

  • the faculty membership examinations (MFDS) held by the UK Royal Colleges
  • the ORE and/or LDS RCS examinations for statutory registration with the General Dental Council (GDC)
